AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — The 2014 Jeep Cherokee's national advertising campaign kicks off on Monday with a 60-second commercial featuring Bob Dylan singing "Motherless Children." Chrysler said the commercial is designed to evoke "a time free of restrictions and unending possibilities." The song's lyrics are surprisingly moody and black for a car commercial. They include the line: "Motherless children run a hard road when your mother's dead." The song was written in 1962. Dylan was recently pitched as a possible candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature in an opinion piece in The New York Times. He is not a typical candidate who comes to mind when it comes to an advertising song or jingle. He once famously said: "Money doesn't talk, it swears." Pop stars like Barry Manilow, who wrote the Band-Aid Brand "Stuck on Me" advertising jingle, among others, have been a more conventional choice through the years. The commercial is called "Built Free" and will air on such programs as "The Voice," "Blacklist," "Revenge" and "X-Factor". The commercial shows children playing and exploring juxtaposed by images of frustrated adults in parking garages and stuck behind a desk. A 30-second "Built Free" spot will begin airing on November 11 on Discovery, E!, Bravo, History Channel, AMC, HGTV, National Geographic and USA. Chrysler's recent advertising efforts have included recruiting top singers, including Jennifer Lopez and Eminem. The new commercials for the 2014 Dodge Durango feature comedian Will Ferrell in his role as goofy news anchor Ron Burgundy. The hype has been building for the Cherokee, which began shipping to dealers last week after a delay. The delay was attributed to issues with the software calibration of the nine-speed transmission. The Cherokee is set to do battle with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape, among others. Edmunds says: Chrysler again rocks the advertising world with the unexpected choice of using a Bob Dylan song to sell the 2014 Jeep Cherokee.

Dylan’s new release, volume 12 of the Bootleg Series
In gleeful anticipation of the most exciting Bootleg release yet, Getintothis’ Paul Riley talks about his love/hate relationship with an idiosyncratic genius and compiles a more discerning top 10 than usual.
‘Oh Bob. Not another advert.’
Those of you who are more than a little into Dylan may well have felt a lurch of the belly if you have come across his Superbowl advert for American car manufacturer Chrysler. This is a knee-jerk reaction to be sure, one that assumes that we have part-ownership of someone we’ve never even met, and yet it is something I am completely guilty of.
The Velvet Underground rarely played offices, but Lou Reed and John Cale made at least one exception about 50 years ago. Hauling Reed's guitar, Cale's electric viola, and an amp into Columbia Records' midtown headquarters, the two set up in an executive's office and blasted out two of the band's new, unrecorded songs, "Heroin" and "The Black Angel's Death Song." Any other label executive at the time might have cowered beneath his desk or run screaming, but not this one. "We plugged in and let him have it," Cale recalls, "and he said, 'Wow, love that viola — that's real excitement...

Bob Dylan gets all Frank on us. The living legend has now closed his last four shows with a cover of Frank Sinatra’s ‘Stay With Me’.
The setlist for the current tour, including the recent Australian shows, had been the same every night up to this week when Dylan dropped ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ and ‘Blowing In The Wind’ for the 1963 Sinatra tune.
‘Stay With Me’ was written by Carolyn Leigh and Jerome Moross and recorded by Frank for the movie ‘The Cardinal’. The...
